Most dropship businesses do not fail on product selection. They fail the first time a parcel is held at a border and nobody has decided who pays to release it.

Phones make that worse than most categories, because a handset almost always clears the value threshold at which import taxes fall due. Several of those thresholds are also changing between now and 2028. This guide works one handset through three destinations, then covers what happens when it arrives faulty.

Who pays customs duty on a dropshipped order?

What is dropshipping customs duty?

Dropshipping customs duty is the import tax a destination country charges on a parcel as it crosses the border. It is calculated on the declared value of the goods, usually plus freight, and it is never included in a supplier’s product or shipping price. Someone settles it before the parcel is released: you, or the person who opens the box.

Legally, the obligation sits with the importer, which in a direct-to-consumer dropship is normally your buyer. Commercially, that answer is not much use. A buyer asked for an unexpected payment by a courier declines the parcel often enough that leaving it to them is the more expensive option.

What is the difference between duty, VAT and handling fees?

Three separate charges, frequently bundled into one demand at the door.

  • Customs duty is a tariff on the goods, set by commodity code and country of origin. Many smartphones attract 0% duty in major markets, but VAT or sales tax still applies.
  • Import VAT or sales tax is charged on the goods plus, in most systems, freight and any duty. This is usually the largest charge.
  • Handling or clearance fees are the courier’s own charge for making the declaration. Small, but they land on the same invoice and get blamed on you.

Should you absorb the tax or leave it to your buyer?

Absorb it, and price it in. Quote a delivered price that already contains the tax, so the parcel arrives with nothing to pay.

A surprise charge is one of the most common triggers for a payment dispute, and disputes put the payment gateway your store depends on at risk. Where a parcel is refused and returned through customs, the return and restocking costs sit with the buyer and only a partial refund is possible, so you end up paying the tax and losing the sale.

No supplier absorbs this for you. Uniqbe’s product and shipping prices exclude duties, VAT and import taxes, and Uniqbe is not responsible for delays caused by a destination country’s customs process. What you control is whether the cost sits in your price or on your buyer’s doorstep.

What does the same phone cost to land in the UK, Australia and Japan?

Take one handset, the OnePlus Nord 6 CPH2795 8+256GB, at $402 tier 1 dropship pricing, with an assumed $30 freight. Exchange rates below are indicative and thresholds are set in local currency.

Same handset, same supplier, three different bills. Price each market separately instead of applying one global markup.

How does UK VAT work on a dropshipped phone?

A $402 handset is well above the ÂŁ135 line, so import VAT is charged at the border on goods plus freight: $432 at 20% is $86.40, bringing the landed cost to $518.40. Unless you are VAT registered you cannot reclaim it, so it is a hard cost, not a pass-through.

Below ÂŁ135 the position flips: VAT is charged at the point of sale and the seller registers with HMRC to account for it. That suits accessories, not handsets.

The UK government confirmed on 23 June 2026 that it is bringing forward the removal of the ÂŁ135 customs duty relief to October 2028 at the latest (GOV.UK, HMRC policy paper last updated 28 October 2026). Smartphones are mostly duty-free anyway, so the practical impact lands on accessories, cases and cables you bundle with a handset.

How does Australian GST work on a dropshipped phone?

At roughly A$611, the handset is below A$1,000, so it is a low value import. Overseas sellers with more than A$75,000 of Australian sales in a rolling 12 months must register and charge 10% GST at checkout, about A$61 here. Goods over A$1,000 are taxed at the border instead, with an Import Processing Charge on top.

The test uses the customs value, which excludes international freight and insurance (ATO). That is more generous than the UK basis.

The trap is consolidation. The Australian Border Force treats goods known to be part of the same order as one consignment, even if they arrive in separate packages, and says it is not acceptable to structure orders to stay under A$1,000 (ACN 2021/01). Two handsets in one parcel, at roughly A$1,222 together, are therefore a single high-value import. Ship a pair as two separate orders from two buyers, not as one parcel.

How does Japanese consumption tax work on a dropshipped phone?

At around ÂĄ60,300 the handset is far above ÂĄ10,000, so tax applies. For a consumer import Japan currently values the goods at 60% of the cart price: $402 Ă— 0.6 = $241.20, plus $30 freight, gives $271.20, and 10% consumption tax is $27.12. On the standard basis it would be $43.20.

That concession is due to go. Japan enacted its 2026 tax reform on 31 March 2026. From 1 April 2028 the ÂĄ10,000 exemption is repealed, overseas sellers can register for consumption tax from 1 October 2027, and the 60% valuation rule is reported to end on the same date (KPMG; Ministry of Finance summary as relayed by a practitioner) [CONFIRM: 60% rule end date against the Ministry of Finance text]. Until then the figures above hold.

What else has changed in 2026?

  • European Union: the €150 duty exemption has been replaced by a flat €3 duty per item category on small parcels from 1 July 2026 (reported by Waredock and SellKitHub) [CONFIRM: against the EU Commission notice].
  • United States: the $800 de minimis exemption is suspended for every country, and the US treats Hong Kong-origin goods as Chinese. This guide does not cover US landed cost.

Thresholds and rates move, so confirm the markets you sell into with the local customs authority before you publish a delivered price.

Which countries can you not dropship phones to?

Roughly 78 destinations sit outside Uniqbe’s shipping network, and the list is not the one most resellers would guess. Sanctioned territories are on it, as you would expect. So are Mexico, Turkey, Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt.

Check the current list in the Shipping and Delivery Guide before you write store copy or set ad targeting. Remote and rural addresses can attract a surcharge shown at checkout, and an address can be corrected before dispatch through WhatsApp or email, but once a parcel has left, re-routing is a request to the courier rather than a guarantee.

What happens when a phone arrives faulty?

Two different policies, and suppliers who blur them are usually hiding the second answer.

What does the 7-day DOA policy cover?

Dead on Arrival covers a unit that is faulty when it reaches your buyer. The window is 7 days from delivery and the remedy is a one-to-one replacement. You pay to return the faulty handset to Hong Kong; Uniqbe pays to ship the replacement out.

  • The device must be returned unused, in original condition, with every in-box accessory.
  • It must be fully unlocked: Find My iPhone disabled, Android screen lock removed, Google account signed out, Xiaomi account unsynced.
  • Claims go in as an RMA request form emailed to info@uniqbe.com with photo or video evidence. Uniqbe aims to respond within 48 hours.
  • Free gifts, standard in-box accessories and network-related faults are not covered.

Contact support before promising a replacement. A large share of reported faults turn out to be setup problems resolved over chat, with no return or shipping bill [CONFIRM: state the ~40% figure?].

Is a warranty included, or is it an add-on?

An add-on, bought on the same order as the handset. It cannot be added after a fault appears.

How does Uniqbe Limited Store handle shipping and claims?

Orders are processed in 1 to 2 business days from payment, and delivery typically runs 5 to 10 business days after that by DHL or FedEx from Hong Kong. Shipping cost is shown at checkout. For transit times by region, see Hong Kong dropshipping shipping times.

Behind that sit nine written policy guides in the Help Center, including a Customs Duty and Tax Guide. Published terms are what you can quote back when a claim is contested. Support runs Monday to Friday, 10am to 7pm Hong Kong time.

Frequently asked questions

Who pays customs duty on a dropshipping order? The importer of record, which in a direct-to-consumer dropship is normally your buyer. Commercially you should absorb it and price it in, because a refused delivery costs the sale, the return shipping and often the review.

Is there VAT on a phone dropshipped to the UK? Yes. A handset above ÂŁ135 attracts 20% import VAT on goods plus freight at the border, which you cannot reclaim without VAT registration. Below ÂŁ135, VAT is charged at the point of sale.

Is GST charged on dropshipped goods in Australia? Yes. For consignments of A$1,000 or less, registered overseas sellers charge 10% GST at checkout. Above A$1,000 it is collected at the border, and goods known to be one order count as one consignment.

What happens if a parcel is rejected by customs? It returns, with return and restocking costs on the buyer and only a partial refund possible. Under-declaring value is the most common cause and turns a small saving into a total loss.

Can you dropship phones to any country? No. Roughly 78 destinations are outside the shipping network, including several large markets. Match your store’s shipping zones to the current list.

Conclusion

Customs and after-sales are the two places where a thin-margin phone business quietly loses money, and both are fixable before your first order. Price the tax in, match your shipping zones to what your supplier can reach, and read the DOA and warranty terms while nothing is going wrong.
